The long version

General

This privacy policy describes how we handle your personal information, and your use of differentlife.co.za (the Website) constitutes your acceptance of the terms of this Privacy Policy (the Policy). Your acceptance of the Policy means that you expressly consent for us to collect, store, use and disclose your personal information to help the differentlife.co.za website work. Information that we collect may be stored and processed in, or transferred to, countries outside South Africa, but such countries shall have the same level of data protection as is applicable in South Africa. We may, from time to time, in our sole discretion, amend this privacy policy to meet legislative and other requirements. All amendments thereto will be posted on the Website. Your continued use of the Website constitutes your acceptance of these terms as modified.

Collection and Use of personal information

Different Life may collect and process certain personal information. Where we refer to “personal information”, it means “personal information” as defined in the Protection of Personal Information Act, 4 of 2013 (“POPIA“), and “personal data” as per the General Data Protection Regulation 2016/679 (“the GDPR“). Personal information includes any information about a person that can be used to identify a person directly or indirectly.

POPIA includes the personal information of juristic persons in its ambit – so we will protect the personal information of juristic persons in the same manner as any other person’s personal information.

The personal information we collect

We collect, amongst others, the following personal information: personal details, such as your name, email address or telephone number; billing information, such as relevant payment information and VAT registration number; and legally required information, which includes any additional information that the law requires from us to verify your identity.

How we collect personal information

Directly from you when you use our Website or any of our services or if we request it from you. In limited instances, we collect personal information from third parties. We will only collect personal information this way where such information is publicly available or for legitimate business purposes. Through the use of cookies, which will mainly be used to identify visitors that return to our website. You can prevent us from doing this through a setting on your browser. Cookies only store information from your browser and cannot access data on your computer.

Use of your personal information

We may use your personal information for any legitimate business purposes relating to our services and/or business activities. Some of the purposes for which we use your personal information include:

  • responding to your queries posted on our website or emailed to us;
  • onboarding you as a client and verifying your identity (as required by law);
  • providing you with our services;
  • referring you to other service providers with your consent;
  • improving our website and services by analysing certain information collected, including cookies and other related information;
  • sending you information (in the form of our newsletter) and inviting you to events; and/or complying with our regulatory or other obligations.

    We will only share your personal information for purposes of providing services to you or any other legitimate business purpose relating to our business activities, including but not limited to, the protection of our or your rights, complaints, marketing, or enforcing any agreement between us. Where required for our business operations, we may share your personal information with our service providers. We only share information with service providers after we enter into an agreement with the service provider to regulate the way in which the personal information will be secured. Where the law requires us to do so, we may also share your personal information with third party service providers, agents, contractors, employees, law enforcement agencies or business affiliates. We will only share your personal information in these instances where it is necessary for us to do so and only to the extent that your personal information is needed for such third parties to perform their services or obligations.

    Communication

    When you get a quote from Different Life we will send you follow-up emails about Different and buying life insurance. Every email includes an “unsubscribe” link at the bottom so you can stop receiving them at any time. From time to time we may request information from you via surveys or contests. Participation in these surveys or contests is completely voluntary.

    Security

    We will take all reasonable steps to ensure that your personal information is protected. We protect and manage personal information that we hold about you by using electronic and computer safeguards like firewalls, data encryption, and physical and electronic access control to our buildings. We only authorise access to personal information to those employees who require it to fulfil their designated responsibilities.

    Password protection

    When accessing the services offered on our Website, part of the security measures taken include the issuing of a password. It is your sole responsibility to keep the password secure, and to not allow any other person to use your password. You agree that you will not hold Different Life liable for loss or damages of any nature that may be suffered as a consequence of the unauthorised use of your password.

    Cookies & Logs

    We may collect information about users who visit the Website and aggregate this information for statistical purposes. We use the information collected to help us understand more about our users and how the site is used in order to provide you with a better service.

    A cookie is a small data file that your browser writes to your own computer’s hard drive in order to remember certain information and is linked to your user profile while on our site. Cookies are used to store your Username and Password so that you don’t need to type these in each time you log in. If you reject cookies, you can still search projects for service providers. However, in order to log in, cookies are required to be turned on.

    As is done with most websites, we log each visit to each web page. A log entry can contain information typically found in the “header” of your web browser’s request such as the browser type you used, your Internet Protocol address, and the date and time of day. We may also log your cookie’s identification number and the URL of the last site you visited. This log information is important for security, audit and quality improvement, as well as for monitoring the health of our service.

    POPI Act

    Different Life complies with the regulations of the Protection of Personal Information (POPI) act.This means that we:

  • will only keep personal data that is adequate, relevant, and not excessive in relation to the purposes for which it is processed;
  • will use data only for the specific purposes for which it was collected;
  • will not keep personal information for longer than is necessary;
  • will not disclosed personal details to third parties without the consent of the individual;
  • will allow individuals to have access to information held about them if requested; and
  • will take adequate security measures in order to protect your personal information.

    We may include links to other third party websites which do not fall under our supervision. We cannot accept any responsibility for your privacy or the content of these websites, but we display these links to make it easier for you to find information about specific subjects.

    Right to object

    You may, on reasonable grounds, object to us using your personal information. If you object, we will stop using your personal information, except if the law allows its use.
